Redfish: Where to Find Them, How to Catch Them, and Why Everyone Loves Them!

REDFISH EXPLAINED

MAY FISHING EXPLAINED

The month of May represents the peak of the spring fishing season in Southwest Florida. With water temperatures firmly established in the high 70s and low 80s, the “Big Three” are in high gear. Baitfish, primarily scaled sardines (whitebait) and threadfin herring, are thick across the flats and near the passes, fueling an aggressive bite.

Snook have completed their move to the outside points and are stacked in the passes for their upcoming spawn. Redfish are roaming the shorelines in larger schools, taking advantage of the higher daytime tides. Spotted Seatrout are abundant on the deeper grass flats, providing consistent action for all skill levels.

Air Temperature: Daily highs average 86°F; Lows average low 70s° F.

  • Wind
Primarily Southeast at 5-10 mph; calm mornings followed by predictable afternoon sea breezes.
  • Water Clarity
Very high clarity in the Sound, especially during the middle of the incoming tide.
  • Water Temps
Low 70s at dawn, quickly rising to 80-82°F by mid-afternoon.
  • Water Level
Stronger daytime high tides provide excellent coverage for mangrove-line fishing.
  • Key Pattern
Peak bait abundance + stable warmth = explosive topwater and live bait action.

Tides, Moon & Astronomical Data (May, 2026)

Captiva • Pine Island Sound • Galt Island

The “Flower Moon” cycle in May brings the strongest tides of the spring, creating the heavy water flow necessary for world-class snook and redfish fishing.

  • Full Moon
May 1, 2026 – Massive tidal swings; prime time for pass fishing.
  • Last Quarter
May 9, 2026 – Clean water and predictable morning feeding windows.
  • New Moon
May 16, 2026 – Significant afternoon high tides; ideal for redfish under the mangroves.
  • First Quarter
May 23, 2026 – Moderate currents; great for targeting trout over deep grass.

Nailing the bite for inshore fishing in Sanibel during May is all about timing those tides with precision. The May transition delivers even harder-running water movement, especially as we dial into the “Flower Moon” moon cycles that keep the bait flushing and the predators hungry.

Redfish, Snook, & Tarpon Behavior (May, 2026)

Snook (Peak Migration Report)

  • Where
Pass edges, bridge pilings, beach troughs, and outside mangrove points.
  • When
Best on strong outgoing tides at night or early morning incoming tides.
  • Why
Fish are congregating in massive numbers near the passes for the spawning season.

Redfish

  • Where
Under the shade of mangrove overhangs during high tide; edges of oyster bars on the low.
  • When
Higher afternoon water levels provide the best access to the “redfish highways.”
  • Why
Increased water levels allow them to forage for crabs and shrimp deeper in the roots.

Spotted Seatrout

  • Where
Potholes within grass flats and deeper 4–6 foot grass edges.
  • When
All day, provided there is moving water and bait present.
  • Why
Trout are actively spawning and feeding voraciously on the massive schools of whitebait.

May 2026 Summary

The spring transition has shifted into high gear, and the “Spring Surge” is now a full-blown feeding frenzy. While April was about finding movement, May is all about finding the feast.

As water temperatures settle into that sweet spot between 80–85°F, the “Pine Island Sound” is exploding with life. Massive bait pods—from glass minnows to pilchards are stacked up everywhere, and the “Big Three” have followed them right into their prime summer haunts. With the Silver King officially joining the party, expect the Snook, Redfish, and Trout to be at their most active, heavy-bodied, and aggressive state of the entire year. Just look at the slab in some of the catches in the posted photos. That’s the kind of action waiting for you on the flats right now.

Work the shadow lines of docks or the “white water” near pass structures.
  • Patterns
Large white baitfish patterns (DT’s Minnow) or Enrico Puglisi streamers.
  • Presentation
Fast, erratic strips to mimic a panicked sardine.
  • Gear
9-weight fly rod with a 40lb fluorocarbon bite tippet.

Redfish

– Fly Fishing

  • Tactics
Drift over expansive grass flats, blind-casting into sand patches (potholes).
  • Patterns
Clouser Minnows in chartreuse/white or pink/white.

Guide’s Insights (May, 2026)

Captain: Jake Flood

Notes / Patterns Observed This Week:

Captain’s Tip
““May 2026 is providing some of the best snook fishing we’ve seen in years. The fish are healthy and the sheer volume of bait in the Sound is incredible. We are finding the Redfish are really responding to the afternoon high tides—get those lures tight to the mangroves. Also, don’t overlook the Trout; we’ve been seeing some ‘gator’ trout over 22 inches in the deeper potholes near Cayo Costa. It’s a great month for an Inshore Slam!””
– Capt. Steve

Summary Forecast & Fishing Outlook (May, 2026)

Weather Overview

May in Southwest Florida fishing represents the pinnacle of the spring season, characterized by even greater stability than the preceding month. While April brought the initial “Spring Surge,” May is defined by consistent warmth and the arrival of summer-like patterns without the intense humidity of later months. This stability allows water temperatures to settle into the ideal 80–85°F range, triggering an explosion of life across the Pine Island Sound. With glass minnows, pilchards, and threadfins swarming the flats, this month offers the year’s most aggressive feeding windows for the “Big Three” and the spectacular arrival of the “Silver King”.
