Redfish: Where to Find Them, How to Catch Them, and Why Everyone Loves Them!
February in Southwest Florida fishing is characterized by the tail end of the winter cycle. While cold fronts still sweep through, there is a noticeable increase in daylight and the first hints of pre-spring warming. Pine Island Sound fishing remains excellent for those who focus on thermal refuges. Water clarity is at its annual peak due to low rainfall, making this a prime month for fly fishing redfish in Florida.
- Typical Weather
Mild and breezy; daytime highs average 74°F–78°F, with overnight lows in the high 50s. - Winds
Predominantly North to Northeast (10–15 mph); calmer periods occur between frontal passages. - Water Temps
Generally mid-60s, with afternoon spikes into the low 70s on dark-bottom flats. - Best Feeding Window
Activity peaks from late morning through mid-afternoon as the sun warms the shallows.
Tides, Moon & Astronomical Data
Captiva • Pine Island Sound • Galt Island
- Moon Phase
February 2026 begins with a Full Moon on February 1st. A New Moon follows on February 17th, which will coincide with an annular solar eclipse, creating significant tidal pulls and increased fish movement. - Best Solunar Periods
Focus on the mid-day incoming tides during the first and third weeks of the month.. - Astronomical Notes
The New Moon eclipse period (Feb 16–18) will provide the strongest “spring tides” of the month.

Redfish & Snook Behavior
Redfish
- Where
Tight schools on mud flats, oyster bars, and shallow backcountry bays near Matlacha fishing grounds. - When
Best from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM as the sun hits the dark bottom. - Why
Metabolism is linked to water temp; they move shallow to “thaw out” and feed on small crustaceans.
Snook
- Where
Residential canals, backcountry creeks, and under boat rentals Sanibel docks. - When
Mid-day during peak warmth or night fishing under lights. - Why
They are cold-blooded; they seek thermal stability in deep water or up-river “dark” water.

Redfish & Snook: Tactics for Fly & Spin Anglers
Redfish
– Fly Fishing
- Flies
Weighted shrimp patterns, Clouser minnows in tan/white, and small crab patterns. - Technique
Sight fishing on the flats. Use long leaders (10–12 ft) for the ultra-clear winter water. - Retrieve
Slow, deliberate strips with frequent pauses.
Snook
– Fly Fishing
- Flies
Schminnows, Enrico Puglisi baitfish, or Myakka Minnows in darker colors. - Technique
Target “pockets” in mangroves or deep dock shadows where water is still. - Retrieve
Extremely slow; let the fly sink into the strike zone near the bottom.
Redfish

Redfish
– Spin Fishing
- Artificial
Gold spoons (1/4 oz) or 3-inch Gulp! Shrimp on a 1/8 oz jig head. - Live Bait
Fresh cut ladyfish or live shrimp pinned to the bottom. - Retrieve
Slow and methodical; keep the lure in the “strike zone” longer.
Snook
– Spin Fishing
- Artificial
Suspending twitchbaits (Mirrolure) or soft plastic swimbaits worked slowly. - Live Bait
Large live shrimp or small pinfish drifted into deep structure. - Retrieve
“Dead sticking” or very slow twitches; avoid fast, aggressive retrieves.

Guide’s Insights
Captain: Jake Flood
Notes / Patterns Observed This Week:
Captain’s Perspective
February is the month of the “Big School.” We are seeing redfish bunched up in groups of 50-100 fish. The key to success right now in the Sanibel fishing report is stealth. Because the water is so clear, these fish are spooky. Whether you are on a Captiva fishing report excursion or exploring the Sound, quiet polling and long casts are mandatory. Don’t overlook the “muds”, if you see a patch of cloudy water in an otherwise clear flat, there’s a school of reds rooting for shrimp right there.
